Youth conferences

group

Two European Youth Conferences on Smoking Prevention were carried out in the year 2000 in Berlin, Germany and in
2002 in Munich, Germany.

The conferences intended to engage and to involve young people from all over Europe in smoking prevention issues
and to encourage them to decide on, or to continue with, a smoke-free life by the reinforcement of non-smoking intentions.
Moreover, pupils should be encouraged to engage themselves in active work in order to help create a smokefree Europe.

The target groups for the conferences were pupils aged 13 and upwards. The conferences served as a brilliant platform for
young people to get together, to actively participate in health promotion and to learn about other cultures.

Within the framework of the Smokefree Class Competition, classes from 13 European countries participated in a competition
where they developed and carried out non-smoking projects, and presented them to other young people from Europe. More than
600 pupils, co-ordinators and teachers attended the conferences.

The conference in Munich was carried out in co-operation with European Commission funded campaign “Feel free to say no”.
